Sensory armchair for patients with Alzheimer's

Caterpillar

Many patients diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease are night walkers. They wander restlessly around the nursing home corridors or in their own home suffering from stress, confusion and pain. Good quality sleep is essential for the well-being of these patients. This armchair is both sensory and relaxing. The rounded, noise-canceling shape blocks out unwanted sounds that contribute to overstimulation and the footrest and neck covers provides for better blood circulaton.

The patient is guided to the chair by a caregiver. This contact helps to create a transition to a state of sleep, providing a moment of calm and comfort.

Caterpillar is a collaboration between textile designer Rabia Sadiq and myself. It is part of a project requested by the Nivernais region of Morvan, France, in collaboration with the Paris-based design school ENSCi.

The project focused on France's "villages of the future", and in particular older people living in rural areas. It involved several weeks of in-depth research where we lived in, and visited, villages in the Nivernais region. This let us experience the nursing homes, activity programs and local city councils in the area up close.

Preserving the humanity of the elderly and making a familiar, relaxing product that can both be a relaxing part of the home, but also a medical help has been important. For instance through drawing-exersises to capture a taste of the elders personalities.

Emphasizing the humanity in the patients, and creating a familiar, relaxing product that can be both a part of the home, but also a medical aid, has been important. One of the tools we used to achieve this was drawing exercises designed to capture a bit of the elderly's personality and values.
